V-Moda Vibe Duo for iPhone

V-Moda was the first company to design iPhone earphones supplied with a call/music control button that can easily switch between chatting on the phone and listening to music. The original iPhone earphones are no good – waste bin shall be their home … V-Moda Vibe Duo seems to be an alternative worth considering. But is it actually as nice as the package says?

The box is really a blast – just look at the hot stamping and silver pantone, as shown in the Wired magazine.

The set includes: earphones, ear fittings in two colors and three sizes, and a holding case. The cable is hidden inside textile insulation.

I actually expected voice to be transmitted clearly at phone calls. So it was more important to test the core function, i.e. music playing.

Pink Floyd’s “The Division Bell” (1994) was picked to play the role of guinea pig – I know what it should sound like after years of playing it on the Marantz tube amp. I do realize that testing this kind of earphones is quite an unpredictable undertaking with many variables, yet you never know before you try …

The big and unpleasant surprise with V-Moda Vibe Duo is the unbearable highs. Shocking. The bass is ok, but the highs are literally beyond comprehension. I tried the original iPod nano earphones – the usual “earplug” tones are evident and accepatble. Plugging Vibe Duo back it, the highs are gone, and the bass is cheap-disco style. Could do way better for such an expensive toy. Nothing else to test – the vendor just screwed up.

Resume: pretty accessory for an undemanding listener..

Update: compared to other similar iPhone earphones, V-Moda Vibe Duo are way ahead. But they are no good for music appreciation. Hopefully, Sony and Philips are about to present something. Sound alternative: get an adapter and connect Grado SR60 – a cost-effective solution and sounds way better too.
